What role will you play?

Reporting to the Business Solution Delivery (BSD) Head for Enablers, Middleware and Databases, the role of the Director - Business Solution Delivery (Middleware and Databases) is to manage the end-to-end delivery and Support of IT solutions for their business sub-domain. This is a pivotal role as they will liaise with senior members of the IT leadership team, the business, suppliers, and other stakeholders to deliver IT solutions that meet business needs. The Director - Business Solution Delivery is accountable for the portfolio management of their sub-domain, from prioritization, design, orchestration of work, interdependency and risk management, delivery, to successful transition and support of IT solutions.  Working in conjunction with Architecture, they are also accountable for the implementation of programs that evolve Middleware and Database solutions in concert with IT and Business strategic direction.

The Director - Business Solution Delivery is a senior leadership role that manages business and technology expectations throughout the delivery process and works closely with their product owner (i.e. business sub-domain counterpart) to deliver the expected outcomes. This individual needs to understand business needs, generate proactive discussions, and then determine the best course of action on how IT can enable the business. To do so, this individual will develop a deep understanding of the existing middleware and database technology landscape and how to integrate and evolve this area to deliver new capabilities and secure, sustainable IT solutions.


What will you be responsible for? (apart from innovating)

  • Provide leadership for the Middleware and Databases product areas in the logical and physical system design, and ensure design is consistent and well-integrated with existing conceptual, logical, and physical architectures, in collaboration with the Business Domain and Solution Integration Architects
  • Collaborate with the Architecture Center of Expertise on solution designs to ensure they comply with enterprise architectural standards, design patterns and roadmaps
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to ensure alignment on future roadmaps and IT strategies that facilitate and enable the integration of applications, services and business processes using common technologies and methodologies
  • Manage the sub-domain’s IT and business delivery team including capacity management and resource allocation to maximize delivery capabilities
  • Research and evaluate software technology, products, and solutions, and make recommendations on technology/production introduction, phase-out, and retirement
  • Work across the Canada Post group of Companies (CPGC) to understand and leverage common solution components where appropriate
  • Work to create, execute and maintain the business sub-domain’s backlog of work by understanding, aligning, and integrating with the business’ priorities and overall strategy
  • Consult and collaborate with the product owner to shape and manage the pipeline of opportunities and assess and anticipate current and future business needs
  • Together with the Business Solution Delivery Head, facilitate the prioritization process for the sub-domain and keep this list of IT priorities and requests up to date in the global portfolio and backlog management
  • Track and monitor the progress of projects and programs in this area, escalating issues to appropriate stakeholders
  • Ensure that KPI’s and performance metrics are in place that ensure solutions and services deliver business value, perform under load and are robust and secure
  • Manage the performance of key partners and vendors in this area
  • Direct and oversee the management of the business sub-domain’s IT budget and provide transparency on costs and capabilities.
  • Provide high level estimates of effort and track performance and budget consumption
  • Manage the Middleware and Databases team including people management, resourcing, defining roles and responsibilities, staff reviews/appraisals, recruitment/dismissals and staff training
  • Ensure collaboration with the Service Introduction and Management and IT Operations teams 

What skills you need for this role to be yours?

  • Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience of leading and contributing to the success of a range of mid-to-large size initiatives with above-average levels of complexity and business criticality
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in leading initiatives in middleware (Enterprise Service Bus, Queuing, Gateways, Protocols, etc.)
  • Delivery experience and familiarity with common enterprise databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, etc.)  
  • Demonstration of progressively advancing roles within IT.
  • Demonstrated experience leading medium to large multi-disciplinary teams and building a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Experience managing large, complex investment budgets
  • Domain knowledge and technical expertise: Demonstrated familiarity with vendor and open-source middleware and database solutions and architectures (Previous technology expertise in these areas is an asset)
  • Value Management: Can identify the effectiveness and completeness of business and technology strategies and ensure cross-organization alignment with stakeholders
  • Solid project management skills

  • Academic: Undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, business, or equivalent (required)
  • Graduate degree in Business Administration (MBA) (Asset)
  • Certifications/skills: TOGAF (Asset), ITIL foundations (Asset), IT Architecture Certification (Asset), SOA (Asset), Integration technologies (FUSE/ DataStage / MQ) (Asset)
  • Certifications: PMP (Asset), ITIL foundations (Asset), Agile (Asset)
